The Philippines has secured another term on the International Maritime Organization Council, Category C, for the 2026–2027 biennium, strengthening the country’s voice in global maritime affairs.
Ambassador Teodoro L. Locsin Jr., presenting the country’s bid in London, highlighted the Philippines’ crucial role in the maritime sector, noting that one in every five seafarers worldwide is Filipino. He emphasized the country’s commitment to safer, greener, and more inclusive maritime development.
MARINA Administrator Sonia B. Malaluan welcomed the result, calling it a renewed mandate to champion the rights and welfare of Filipino seafarers.
As an IMO member since 1964 and a Council member since 1997, the Philippines reaffirmed its commitment to maritime safety, environmental protection, innovation, and adherence to international law, including the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.
DOTr Assistant Secretary for Maritime Villamor Ventura Plan also congratulated the delegation, praising the efforts of MARINA and the Philippine Embassy in London.
The newly elected IMO Council will convene on December 4 to elect its Chair and Vice Chair for the next biennium.
