The Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) is enforcing online ticketing to boost transparency in sea travel.

Following two-day public consultations in Cebu City and Iloilo City, MARINA discussed the proposed rules for the mandatory Shipping Online Ticketing System, or SOTS, for inter-island passenger ships. Representatives from domestic shipping companies, the Philippine Ports Authority, local government units, and technology providers took part in the discussions.

SOTS, a key part of MARINA’s modernization and digitalization program, aims to streamline ticketing, ensure transparent fare collection, allow convenient online booking, improve safety through real-time passenger manifests, and support data-driven regulation of inter-island routes.

Director Annabell Lagas of MARINA’s Domestic Shipping Service emphasized that digital transformation is not just about technology—it’s about improving public service, ensuring transparency, and safeguarding passengers.

MARINA says it will review all industry feedback, conduct further technical consultations as needed, and incorporate revisions before issuing the final circular, reaffirming its commitment to inclusive governance and ongoing dialogue with the shipping sector. | via Merrowen Andong
