The Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) accompanied the delegates from World Wide Fund (WWF) for Nature – Philippines and WWF-Norway to shipyards in Navotas City today, 11 October 2022.

It is one of the activities of WWF in line with its project with Grieg Group entitled “Clean Ports, Clean Oceans: Improving port waste management in the Philippines”. The activity is important for the delegates to learn more about shipyards and their challenges related to solid waste management.

Engr. Maria Teresa D. Mamisao, Chief, Shipping Operations Specialist, Shipyards Regulation Service (SRS) of the MARINA and Ms. Czarina Constantino – Panopio of the WWF-Philippines led the visit of the delegates to Nautilus Shipyard & Repair Inc. and Josefa Slipways Inc. in Navotas City.

A few hours before heading to shipyards, the designated personnel from MARINA and the delegates from WWF-Philippines and WWF-Norway held a meeting at the MARINA Central Office regarding their partnership on ship and port waste management and the campaign against marine plastic litter.

Prior to this, the MARINA and WWF-PH sealed its partnership by signing a Memorandum of Understanding during the Second Marine Environment Protection Forum held at Midas Hotel, Pasay City on 23 September 2022.

The purpose of the MoU is for the MARINA and WWF-Philippines to work together with the help of other governmental organizations and private stakeholders to strengthen the policies and programs with the shared goal of reducing plastic pollution by preventing plastic leakage into ports and the ocean, which negatively impacts marine life, human health, and livelihoods.
