With the aim of broadening Cebu’s influence in the global maritime industry, the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) and the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SONAME) hosted the 2nd Cebu Maritime Expo and Boat Show 2024 at the Sky Hall SMX, SM Seaside City Cebu on 18-20 April 2024.
MARINA Administrator Sonia Malaluan mentioned that the event was organized in relation to the goals of the MARINA and SONAME in developing and improving the Philippine maritime industry, focusing on the implementation of the programs under the Maritime Industry Development Plan (MIDP) 2028. She added that the exposition showcases the current trends, products, innovations and developments relating to shipbuilding, ship repair, modernization of domestic shipping and maritime tourism. The Cebu Maritime Expo is an excellent venue for knowledge exchange, sharing of best practices and opportunity for networking and collaboration between and among different players in maritime.
Undersecretary for Maritime Mr. Elmer Francisco Sarmiento delivered the keynote speech, which focuses on the efforts of the government in tourism, maritime safety and innovation. He provided updates on the plans and programs of the concerned agencies including MARINA. Usec Sarmiento also reiterated that human advancement should never been at the expense of environment protection.
He affirmed the DOTr’s commitment of providing high quality transport experience to the public by meeting the rising standards of today and preparing for the expected demands of the future.
The opening ceremony of the 2nd Cebu Maritime Expo and Boat Show 2024 was also attended by MARINA Regional Office VII Director Annabell Lagas, SONAME Chairperson Mr. Sammuel Lim, SONAME President Mr. Raymund Puso. Also present were the MARINA Chief of Staff Engr. Ramon Hernandez and French Maritime Expert Mr. Emeric Faure who both presented in the technical conference.
Messages were delivered by Cebu City Vice Mayor Hon. Raymond Alvin Garcia, Cebu City Tourism Officer Mr. Neil Odchigue, Coast Guard District Central Visayas Commodore Christopher Meniado, Cebu Port Authority General Manager Mr. Francisco Comendador III, Senior Tourism Officer for Region 7 Mr. Marlon Barrientos, other government officials and maritime stakeholders.
