The Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) joined the Filipino community in Athens, Greece for the celebration of the 126th Philippine Independence Day.

Led by Ambassador Giovanni Palec, MARINA Administrator Sonia Malaluan, the DMW Officials and the Philippine delegation along with Filipino migrant workers held the Independence Day Celebration at the 31st Open Basketball Court of the Organismo Neolias Kai Athlisis.

With the theme “Kalayaan, Kinabukasan and Kasaysayan”, Malaluan said that the MARINA is doing its part to ensure that Filipino seafarers are free to go on board any type of ships globally. She said that it is also to ensure a brighter future for their families while making history as the best seafarers in the world.

Malaluan also mentioned about the continuous recognition by the European Union in certificates issued by the Philippines and the inclusion of the country to the IMO’s whitelist, which serves as a testament to the high standards in maritime education, training and certification. The Administrator also expressed her gratitude to the seafarers and other overseas Filipino workers for their dedication and love of country, and she described them as “modern day heroes.”

During the event, MARINA Officials also met Filipino seafarers working onboard Greek yachts, as well as other former ship’s officers who are now working in Greek shipping companies. The Administrator asked them of any problem or concern they may have when it comes to securing seafarers’ documents and certification to which they responded on the negative.

Among the attendees were Assistant Secretary Jerome Pampolina and Assistant Secretary Mario Zinampan of Dep’t of Migrant Workers, MARINA Chief of Staff Engr. Ramon Hernandez, Labor Attache’ Cynthia Cruz, Ms. Chona Pamintuan, Chairperson of the 126 Independence Day Organizing Committee and its members.

Meanwhile, the MARINA officials also attended the Flag-Raising Ceremony during Independence Day at the Philippine Embassy in Greece.
