Legazpi, Albay- With the aim to capacitating its surveyors, the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) conducted the Four (4) – Day Training on Load Line Assignment of Ships on 23-26 July 2024.

The said training, organized by the Shipyards Regulation Service (SRS) in coordination with Bureau Veritas (BV) and hosted by the MARINA Regional Office V, is a course training for Naval Architects, marine engineers and other MARINA technical personnel to have a uniform understanding and interpretation of MARINA Circular No. 2021-02 and some provisions of International Convention on Load Lines of 1966 as modified by 1988 Protocol, as amended, specifically in the computation of load line assignment and procedure of survey.

In her opening remarks, MARINA Deputy Administrator for Operations Engr. Nannette Villamor-Dinopol mentioned that load line marking is just as crucial as the structural integrity of a vessel. She said that it does not only indicates that a vessel has sufficient reserve buoyancy but it also serves as a prerequisite for calculating the ship’s stability. Dinopol emphasized that ignoring the importance of load line could lead to catastrophic consequences.

Meanwhile, MARINA Administrator Sonia Malaluan highlighted the importance of consistently applying load line regulations to ensure safety and stability of ships while at sea. The administrator likewise emphasized the responsibility of MARINA surveyors/naval architects and reminded them to do their work properly and diligently, without compromising integrity.

The Load Line training was facilitated by SRS Director Engr. Ramon Hernandez, Mr. Ji “Jimmy” Ye from Bureau Veritas, French Maritime Expert Mr. Emeric Faure and SRS Division Chief Engr. Ernesto Caluza. It was also participated by MRO V Director Atty. Maximo Bañares Jr. and MARINA Training Institute Director 2nd Mate Louie Lloyd Lamprea.
