The Philippines’ Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) joined the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in celebrating World Maritime Day on 26 September 2024. In a symbolic gesture, the MARINA illuminated its Central and Regional Offices in blue, representing unity within the maritime community and highlighting the vital role of shipping in the global economy.
This year’s World Maritime Day theme, “Navigating the Future: Safety First,” emphasizes the importance of safety in the maritime industry.
In a special program held in Manila, MARINA Administrator Sonia B. Malaluan underscored that safety is not only a regulatory obligation but a moral imperative for the maritime sector.
“People, innovation, unity of action – these are the three important things that I want to emphasize today,” Administrator Malaluan stated. “As we celebrate this day, let us be reminded of the importance of prioritizing our seafarers’ mental and physical well-being in creating a safer work environment and healthy workforce, which is critical in maintaining safety at sea,”
Administrator Malaluan also highlighted the timely signing of Republic Act No. 12021, or the “Magna Carta of Filipino Seafarers,” as a testament to the government’s recognition of the value of human element, particularly the welfare and wellbeing of seafarers, towards the end goal of ensuring safety of life and property at sea.
In a video message, Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Jaime J. Bautista emphasized the importance of the new law, acknowledging the sacrifices of Filipino seafarers and highlighting their contributions to both the maritime industry and the nation’s economy.
Lastly, IMO Secretary General Arsenio Dominguez highlighted the importance of maritime safety by emphasizing the impact of the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS). “2024 marks 50 years since the treaty was adopted. We can be proud of the crucial role this Convention has played in setting international safety standards for ship construction, equipment, and operation, preventing maritime disasters and protecting lives.”
The MARINA views this year’s World Maritime Day as a powerful reminder of the shared responsibility to uphold safety standards across the maritime industry. As the Philippines, a major seafaring nation, steers its course toward a safer and more sustainable maritime future, the agency remains committed to ensuring the well-being of seafarers and the continued growth of the industry.
