Personnel from STCW Office of the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) honed their research skills through a five-day seminar-workshop on research writing, held from 05-07 March and 10-11, 2025, in Manila.

The seminar-workshop brought together personnel from the MARINA STCW Office, particularly from the Research Development Division (RDD), Public Information Division (PID), Surveillance Division (SD), Quality Management Division (QMD), and Maritime Education and Training Standards Supervisors (METSS).

The seminar-workshop aimed to strengthen the MARINA personnel’s capabilities, specifically in conducting studies on maritime autonomous surface ships (MASS) and alternative fuels, as well as in formulating research instruments and developing project proposals on maritime studies.

Guided by experts from the University of the Philippines Open University, the seminar-workshop focused on Survey Studies, Phenomenology Studies, and Benchmarking Studies as key approaches in maritime research. Resource persons included Assistant Professor Leo Mendel D. Rosario, PhD, DR&DM; Assistant Professor Maria Lourdes T. Jarabe, PhD; and Assistant Professor Remsce A. Pasahol. The resource persons mentored the participants in applying research methodologies and crafting relevant research tools to advance maritime education and training.

As part of the initiative, participants were tasked with developing programs and project proposals for the agency’s research studies, specifically aimed at enhancing seafarers’ training on MASS and alternative fuels. This effort underscored MARINA’s commitment to strengthening its research initiatives, ensuring that personnel are equipped with the necessary skills to contribute to the maritime industry’s evolving landscape.
