Balamban, Cebu — Global shipbuilder Austal Philippines expressed its strong support for the immediate passage of the Shipbuilding and Ship Repair (SBSR) Development Bill, citing its potential to generate jobs, improve local industry competitiveness, and strengthen workforce development in the country.

Austal Philippines President Mr. Wayne Murray, in a meeting with MARINA Shipyard Regulation Service Engr. Marc Pascua said the bill could significantly boost the industry if it helps lower the cost of materials and supports the establishment of more shipyards. “If we reduce costs and build more shipyards, job opportunities will follow,” he said.

The proposed SBSR Development Bill is aligned with the administration’s broader vision to revitalize key industries and bolster local manufacturing. It aims to drive inclusive economic growth and long-term industrial development, with shipbuilding and ship repair positioned as vital pillars of the country’s maritime future.

Director Pascua welcomed the support from Austal and reaffirmed MARINA’s commitment to working closely with industry players.

“We are pushing for the SBSR Bill because we want to unlock the full potential of shipbuilding and ship repair in the Philippines—not just for industry growth, but for job creation and inclusive progress,” Pascua said.

Established in the Philippines in 2012, Austal has built 21 high-speed aluminum vessels deployed to Europe, Abu Dhabi, Korea, and other countries. Known as the manufacturer of the “Ferrari of the Sea,” Austal is part of a global network with shipyards in Australia, the United States, and Vietnam. The Balamban facility currently employs over 500 workers, with plans to hire 1,100 more for an upcoming project.
