The Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) through the Shipyards Regulation Service (SRS) and World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) – Philippines conducted a back-to-back fora at Pasay City on 13 June 2023.

In the morning, the MARINA and WWF-Philippines hosted the “Port and Ship Waste Management with Maritime Schools and Institutions” where the draft modules about environmental sustainability in the maritime industry were presented by Ms. Czarina Panopio, the Project Manager of WWF-PH. Back in September 2022, the MARINA and WWF-Philippines signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) during the “2nd Marine Environment Protection Forum” which resulted to the development of Strategic Action Plan for Port-and-Ship Generated Waste and Marine Litter that was submitted to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).

MARINA Deputy Administrator for Operations Engr. Nannette Villamor-Dinopol said that the event is very important to ensure that the modules are in line with the agenda of maritime schools and institutions in addressing environmental concerns in the country particularly in the maritime industry.

The forum in the morning is also attended by SRS Director II Engr. Ramon Hernandez who presented the National Strategic Action on Marine Plastic Litter (MPL), other MARINA personnel, Atty. Grip Bueta who facilitated the workshop and other Parabukas personnel, and representatives from different maritime schools and institutions including Asian Institute of Maritime Studies (AIMS), STI-NAMEI, ZRC Training Center Phils., Inc., Oceanwide Maritime Services Corp., West Bay College, Philippine Merchant Marine School (PMMS), Nautical Options Training Institute of the Philippines (NOTIP), Consolidated Training Systems Incorporated (CTSI) and Globe Maritime Training Center (GMTC).

Meanwhile, the MARINA and WWF-Philippines also conducted the “Port and Ship Waste Management Consultation Forum with Shipping Companies, Shipyards and Other Entities” in the afternoon which aims to determine challenges and solutions to address marine plastic pollution and solid waste in ports, ships and shipyards.

In her speech, MARINA Deputy Administrator for Planning Ms. Sonia Malaluan said that these activities are important in line with the effective implementation of Maritime Industry Development Plan (MIDP) 2028 which includes the Overriding Program entitled “Promotion of Environmentally Sustainable Maritime Industry.”

The afternoon forum is also attended by the Chief of Staff of the Undersecretary for Maritime Mr. Ricardo Romero and representatives from the Philippine Ports Authority; Philippine Coast Guard; DOST-PCIEERD; 2GO; Keppel Subic Shipyard, Inc.; Keppel Philippines Marine, Inc.; Cleanway Environmental Management Solutions, Inc.; Hadia Marine, Inc.; Agripacific Corporation; Starhorse; Komaco Trading; Metro Shipbuilders and Ship Repairers’ Association (MSSAI) and Boating Industries Association of the Philippines (BIAP).
