MANILA — As the world celebrates the International Day for Women in Maritime today, 18 May 2024, the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) through the Women in Maritime Philippines (WIMAPHIL) MARINA subchapter organized a pivotal event. On 16 May 2024, MARINA hosted a roundtable discussion featuring women leaders with unique careers in the maritime industry with the theme: “Safe Horizons: Women Shaping the Future of Maritime Safety.”
The esteemed panel of speakers included Ms. Merle Jimenez-San Pedro, President, WIMA Asia/WIMAPHIL; Capt. Christine Pauline Bergano-Diciano, Director, Leadership and Doctrine Development Center, Philippine Coast Guard; Engr. Maria Sarena C. Casas, Supervising SOS / OIC, MSID, MARINA; 2M Desiree Penales, Operations Officer, Department of Shipboard Training, MAAP; Atty. Charina Marie Domingo, Legal Officer, Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources; and Capt. Frynz B. Mendoza, Crewing Manager, Archipelago Philippine Ferries Corp.
Prior to the discussion, WIMAPHIL MARINA subchapter President and OIC-Deputy Administrator for Operations, Atty. Sharon D. Aledo, emphasized the crucial role women play in shaping the future of maritime safety. She highlighted the importance of gender diversity and inclusivity in maritime operations, advocating for equal opportunities and recognition for women in the industry.
Echoing Atty. Aledo’s sentiments, OIC-Deputy Administrator for Planning, Nenita S. Atienza, underscored the significance of empowering women in maritime roles. She emphasized the need for policies and initiatives that promote gender equality, safety, and career advancement for women in maritime professions.
The roundtable discussion served as a platform for insightful dialogue, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange among women leaders in the maritime sector. Through such initiatives, MARINA and WIMAPHIL continue to champion diversity, inclusion, and excellence in the maritime industry.
