IN PHOTOS: The Philippine delegation is actively participating in the 108th session of the Maritime Safety Committee (MSC 108) at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Headquarters in London, United Kingdom.

Headed by Undersecretary for Maritime Mr. Elmer Francisco Sarmiento and MARINA Administrator Sonia Malaluan, the Philippine delegation discussed the country’s position in important matters particularly those concerning the enhancement of maritime safety and security.

The said Committee tackles various issues and concerns including enhancement of maritime security especially in Red Sea, setting global standards, seafarers’ issues and the human element, regulating autonomous vessels, piracy and armed robbery against ships, addressing cyber security and focusing on safety issues resulting from emerging technologies, digitalization and decarbonization of ships.

The meeting is scheduled on 15-24 May 2024, which is being chaired by Ms. Mayte Medina of the United States, supported by Vice Chair Capt. Theofilos Mozas of Greece.

Other in-person participants from the Philippines are STCWO Executive Director Mr. Samuel Batalla; MARINA Chief of Staff Engr. Ramon Hernandez; Maritime Attaché in London Atty. Jean Ver Pia, PhD; Maritime Safety Service, MARINA (MSS) OIC-Director Engr. Divinagracia Tolosa, CG CDR Mary Leizl Barbero and Atty. Ana Marie Hernando. There are also representatives from concerned government agencies who are attending the meeting remotely.
