German Shipowners’ Association CEO Dr. Martin Kröger has expressed interest in supporting the crucial initiatives of the Philippines’ Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) Administrator Sonia Malaluan which aimed at bolstering the country’s seafaring and shipping industry during a meeting on 27 February 2024 in Manila.

Among the topics tackled were efforts to advance standards and processes for the comprehensive training, education, and certification of seafarers to meet the evolving demands of the industry. Both parties also explored collaborating on a Just Transition framework, focusing on preparing seafarers for the shift towards low-carbon shipping.

Enhancing the Philippine ship registry system to promote safety, compliance, and competitiveness in the global market was another key aspect of the conversation. Additionally, discussions revolved around supporting the growth and innovation of the domestic shipbuilding industry through incentives and strategic partnerships.

Emphasizing the paramount importance of maritime safety and its connection with marine environment protection, both entities underscored their commitment to sustainable practices and ecosystem preservation.

Also present at the meeting from the German Shipowners’ Association were MGEN Restituto Padilla Jr.; and Capt. Ronald Enrile.

Alongside MARINA Administrator Malaluan, other key officials present included Deputy Administrator for Operations Engr. Nannette Z. Villamor-Dinopol; STCW Office Executive Director Samuel Batalla; Chief of Staff and Shipyard Regulations Service (SRS) Engr. Ramon Hernandez; Domestic Shipping Service (DSS) Director Atty. Rowena Hubilla; and Overseas Shipping Service (OSS) OIC-Director Precila Jara.
